REALM 01 /// THE MIST ROAD

The Mist Road

An atmospheric folk poem exploring mortality, earned wisdom, grief, and the lessons carried beyond the threshold.

“Wisdom rarely feels like grace. It hides in trials you had to face.”

Wisdom is rarely recognised while we are living through the experiences that create it.
Pain, grief, loss, fear, failure and difficult choices can eventually become understanding, compassion and strength.
The final revelation is that the lessons of a lifetime do not disappear with death. They remain within us and guide the path ahead.

Proem

“Every scar you claim as stone was once a doorway you outgrew.”

Stanza I — The Silver Cloak

They say you woke on a road of mist,
where dawn and dusk forever twist,
and a figure cloaked in silver hissed,
“Traveller… what wisdom do you bring
from the world you perchance didn’t dream?”

You touched the fog like woven thread,
felt echoes of the life you’d led.
You said,
“I learned that hearts grow heavy
with unsaid words we tread too gently.
I learned that time is not a river,
it’s a restless tide, a constant shiver.
And every joy we try to claim
melts through our grasp like candle flame.”

The figure nodded,
as if they’d heard this tale before.
“Go on,” they whispered,
“there’s so much more.”

Stanza II — Courage & Undertow

You said,
“I learned that courage isn’t loud,
it’s quiet steps against a crowd.
It’s choosing truth when lies are proud,
and walking tall when fear bows down.

I learned that grief is not a foe,
it’s proof of love we had to know.
It lingers long, it teaches slow,
it shapes the soul in undertow.”

The mist around you curled like smoke,
as if your words were spells you spoke.

“And I learned,” you said,
“that kindness burns
in places where the cold returns.
It’s found in strangers, twists and turns,
in broken hearts that still unlearn
the art of shutting every door
to shield themselves from hurt once more.”

Stanza III — The Mask of Strength

The figure’s eyes glowed faint and blue,
like lanterns lit with morning dew.
“And what of strength?” they softly asked.

You breathed,
“I learned it’s not a mask.
It’s not the roar, the boast, the task,
it’s rising when the shadows ask
for everything you cannot give,
yet giving still, so others live.
It’s holding hope with trembling hands,
and planting seeds in barren lands.”

Stanza IV — The Doorway Outgrown

The figure stepped a little near,
their voice a thread you strained to hear.
“Oh traveler…
you speak as though
your lessons came from pain alone.
But every scar you claim as stone
was once a doorway you outgrew,
a threshold life demanded you
to cross, so you could see anew.”

You looked down at your weathered hands,
the ones that bore what life demands.
“I didn’t feel like wisdom’s heir,”
you whispered to the trembling air.

The figure smiled,
a quiet flare.

“Wisdom rarely feels like grace.
It hides in trials you had to face.
It grows in loss, in empty space,
in every moment you embraced
the truth that life is bittersweet,
a fragile flame, a fleeting beat.”

Stanza V — What Survives

The mist began to shift and sway,
revealing paths in silver clay.
“So tell me now,” the figure said,
“what truth survived the life you led?”

And this time,
with a steadier breath,
you answered what remained after death:

“I learned that every soul is light,
even when swallowed by the night.
I learned that wrong can birth the right,
and broken things can still ignite.
I learned that love outlives the pain,
that loss is never loss in vain.
I learned that hearts can rise again,
and walk through fire without stain.”

Coda — Mortal Dawn

The figure bowed,
as if the tale
had tipped some ancient cosmic scale.

And when you blinked,
the mist was gone,
you stood beneath a mortal dawn.

A quiet truth upon your chest:
the lessons earned through every test
were never meant for death’s domain,
nor locked away in loss or pain.

They lived in you,
in breath, in bone,
to guide the path still yet unknown.
